Through the many different journeys of life, Musgrave Unit Director, Kayla Baker, has worked diligently to become an advocate for Club members as well as a role model.

Boys & Girls Club is a wonderful place to be a kid, filled with unique opportunities, friends and fun, but what truly makes the Club experience most special is its caring & devoted staff. Kayla Baker has held many different titles at the Club, but has never slowed down.

Kayla became connected with the Boys & Girls Club when her son enrolled at the age of five. He is now 12 and still a proud club member. “He was able to learn how to play tennis, learn how to swim and be safe while I was finishing my college education,” said Kayla.

Kayla began substitute teaching after obtaining her degree in education. However, she always craved something more stable for her children and wanted to pursue a job she was truly passionate about. At an event for purchasing school supplies, Kayla’s son recognized CEO Brandy Harris. After a short conversation with Brandy, Kayla applied for a tutoring position at the Sertoma Unit and got the job. “I applied and had an interview and my life as well as my kids' lives were changed for the better,” said Kayla.

Since that time, she has continued to climb the ladder.

“Being a unit director has been a goal of mine after the first 6 months of working at the club,” said Kayla. Kayla accomplished her goal quickly and effectively. Kayla went from being a tutor, to a membership coordinator at the Sertoma Unit, a Program Director at the Musgrave Unit, and now finally, a Unit Director at Musgrave.

Kayla has shown Club members, as well as staff, what it means to be a hard worker and a role model. After realizing her passion for education in high school, she was determined to help children achieve their goals. “I wanted to be a person that I never had growing up,” said Kayla.

Kayla has worn many different hats for the Boys & Girls Club, which has allowed her to impact the lives of many club members.

Kayla said, “I think my entire journey is my favorite. Everyday is different and provides new challenges and awards.”

One of her favorite memories is when the Club shifted to accommodate COVID-19 protocols. Kayla was worried about what the future would look like, but to her surprise, the Club provided for families in new ways, “the way we organized meals, to programming, it was amazing to be a part of and truly hit home that we provide what we can to as many families as we can!”

When asked about why she chose to be a Club leader, Kayla said, "We impact a family, we impact kids and let them be kids."

We are so grateful to have Kayla among our wonderful staff. We can't wait to see what else she accomplishes!
