In partnership with Springfield Public Schools, before/after school care providers in our city are working to make care accessible for every student at every school.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield, SPARC, Springfield Dream Center and the YMCA will help SPS students SHINE this school year.

Thanks to the SHINE Fund by Springfield Public Schools, students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch, will also be eligible to receive free before/afterschool care this school year. Boys & Girls Clubs will also open three new locations at Williams Elementary, McGregor Elementary, and Jarrett Middle School.

The $3.4 million fund will provide SHINE scholarships for up to 2,300 students, while also hiring more academic staff members. Academic coordinators at each Boys & Girls Club location will provide one-on-one and small group tutoring for students, helping them achieve academic goals and foster a love of learning.

The goals for SHINE are to provide effective academic supports for all SPS before/after care providers, to remove barriers to access for the most under-resourced and under-performing SPS students, support SPS families with quality care, and implement a consistent care plan with all wrap-around providers.

Before and after school youth services are incredibly important. Care provided in part by the SHINE fund will work to close the achievement gap, by providing under-resourced and under-performing students with additional time for learning. It will ensure child safety by offering families a safe place for children to learn both during and beyond the school day, allowing parents to return to work. It will address student mental health by connecting young people with caring mentors who are trained and help them build healthy relations to heal from trauma. It will fight childhood hunger by providing meals and snacks for students.

Registration for Boys & Girls Club’s school year program will begin online on July, 26th. SHINE and the SHINE Fund are made possible by $3.4 million in Coronavirus Relief Funds.
