2nd Annual Kiwanis Youth Baseball Camp
Downtown Kiwanis Club was kind enough to sponsor their 2nd Annual Downtown Kiwanis Club Baseball Camp. The event was held at Hammons field on Tuesday, June 20th, and featured the Ozark Generals and other area baseball players as instructors.
The event kicked off at 8am with breakfast, followed by a fun day of learning! Kids got to take their picture with Springfield Cardinals mascot, Louie, before eating lunch. Activities included a 5 station coaching clinic with the Ozark Generals that gave each child a chance to learn hitting, pitching, running, and catching. One young player expressed how much the clinic helped him with his catching.
All participants received a nice Kiwanis Club hat and shirt. 73 youth participated in the camp, all of which are either Club members or players in our BGCS baseball program.
The following day, June 21st, 50 of these members had a blast at a Springfield Cardinals afternoon game. Kiwanis Club gave each member a $10 voucher to spend on concessions, which they greatly enjoyed.
Downtown Kiwanis Club does this project because their club is about helping kids. Additionally, from the 1930's to the 1980's, the Downtown Kiwanis Club ran its own baseball league in Springfield. They want to bring baseball back to the kids and make it to where all kids can enjoy the summer pastime.
Shoutout to Musgrave Unit Director Niki Kiruki, who is also a member of Downtown Kiwanis Club, and BGCS Sports Director Steve Wallace, for all of their hard work!
Additional thanks again to the Ozark Generals and all others who helped make this possible. They did a wonderful job making sure each child received attention and an autograph if they wanted.
Thank you again, and we look forward to next year's amazing camp experience!
