Patrick Gartland, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield, received the Heart & Soul Award at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Midwest Leadership Conference on October 4-6 in Louisville, KY.

Beginning his career with the Boys & Girls Clubs in 1980, Pat served as Executive Director for the Portage County, Ohio Clubs. He then served in the same position for the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Cook County, Illinois from 1985-2002. He and his family moved to Springfield in 2002 where he has served as Executive Director, leading board and staff through three Capital Campaigns, adding three new facilities and renovating one. The most recent addition, the Sertoma Unit at Sherwood Elementary, is the first Boys & Girls Club west of the Mississippi attached to a public school. Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield endowment has more than doubled with Pat’s leadership.

Pat has established numerous partnerships throughout the years in order to expand opportunities for local youth. He has led the Clubs to engage in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America program and operations trends to stay informed on the issues that we need to address locally. Pat was key in establishing the Club’s tennis, mental health and mentoring programs and our area Professional Association and Hall of Fame awards. He has begun or increased opportunities for youth to learn music, sports, technology, photography, STEM, Lego robotics, indoor gardening and much more.  He  has been a mentor for one of our club members since the inception of the mentoring program in 2011.

A dedicated member of the Heart of the Ozarks Sertoma since 2002, Pat held several offices including President, newsletter editor, events volunteer coordinator and also served several years as a volunteer in the HOTO Sertoma Bingo night.

Pat has served as United Way of the Ozarks as Campaign Service Agency Chair, and as the Price Cutter Children’s Charities as a board member and on the Vocational Technical Study Committee for the Springfield Public Schools.

Pat demonstrates great generosity as a leader in sharing Club recognitions with the staff, volunteers and board. He has high energy and is a hard worker, serving at most of the events that the Clubs sponsor and at Sertoma events for the Clubs. Pat loves Boys & Girls Club work because, “It’s incredibly rewarding to be a positive influence in the lives of so many children. It’s a career that I enjoy and I feel passionate about.”
