Thanks for looking into the Mission to Mentor program. Unit staff, volunteers, parents and club members from each of our four Clubs are continually referring youth who they think have the greatest need for a one-on-one mentoring relationship. The goal is to have a fun, positive experience for both the mentor and mentee, and it can be very rewarding to know that you are making a difference in the life of a young person. Pairing these young people with a one-on-one mentor is one more step in reinforcing that “Great Futures Start Here” at the Boys & Girls Clubs.
We ask that each mentor make a commitment to meet with your mentee at least one hour per week for a year, on site at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. (We do realize that this is not always going to be practical in application, but it is our goal. Some club members do not attend in the summer, and some not during the school year.) The Clubs hours during the school year are from 3-8pm Monday-Friday, with the exception of Tuesdays closing at 6:30pm, and summer hours are 7:30 am -5:30pm. We have designated areas for mentors/mentees to do homework together, read, play games or just talk and learn about one another! We also have special events from time to time, to bring mentors and mentees together to have fun at a Springfield Cardinals or Ice Bears game, bowling alley, or some other fun event. Our staff always provides transportation to the events, where we all meet.
We continue to measure the success of the Mission to Mentor program, and to find ways to be more efficient and effective in each aspect of meeting the program goals. It is a lofty goal to one day have a mentor for each of our club members who wants one – right now there are more and more asking and waiting.
